Wow, Friday Larry Ridgeway and I went to Sund Rock in hoodsport to dive. WE had just finished getting my folks on the road for them to move back to Florida and we decided to use the rest of the day wisely
Not only was is a gorgeous day, but the drive was nice, scenery was spectacular and overall was just a really nice time getting there. Once we got there, we geared up and went to the South wall.
The viz once we dropped down was 20-25 ft which was nice, considering he viz lately has not been real great. We dropped to 100' or so in search of cloud sponges, to which we never found any, bummer ![]()
On our way up we came across a female octo cultivating here eggs. It was the first for me to see octo eggs and it was pretty cool. We meandered up the wall, kind of zig zaging up to about 25 ft. There the fun began. the water was beautiful as the sun was lighting everything up wonderfully, no need to even use our lights
. We came across 4 wolf eels then the fiesta resistance, A huge Giant Pacific Octo out in the open. He was not at all concerned about us, and actually came out to play...AWESOME!!!!!! it was truly the experience that many divers wait a lifetime to see and be a part of. We Played with him for about 10 minutes or so then moved on. view the video below to see the encounter
our second dive was on the fishbowl. Equally as stunning. as soon as we dropped down, there was a GPO sitting under some rocks and he sort of came out to play, he was awesome as well....we saw three more wolf eels and another GPO, and he was HUGE..
his suckers were as big as the palm of my hand...amazing. He did not come out though, probably would have scarred us to death if he had....The fish were massive, at times we saw copper rocks that were 18" long and they were stacked up....
Unfortuanely we did not get a third dive in...my suit was flooding and I could not manage any more cold...overall, it was just an amazing day of diving and such a wonderful day. these are the days that divers live for and I hope to have many many more of them as my live moves forward.
Hi All,
Well, As many of you know I was supposed to have an AOW class go out on Saturday. At one time had 7 students plus the DMC's. After attrition I went from 7 to 0 for students and 5-4 on DMC's...go figure![]()
I decided to take the group and do dives anyway so we stayed with Bandito and did our three tank dive.
North point wall was our first and it was amazing, the viz was great and the critters were out in full force. I saw the largest grunt sculpin I have ever seen. he was probably easily the size of 4-5 avg sized sculpins put together...I did not know they got that big
Then we did a drift of the Tacoma Narrows, one word AWESOME
I actually got to se the blocks this time and they are something to behold.
Last dive of the day was Sunrise. That was a nice dive and a really really nice site. Octos all over and we saw at least one den of wolf eels. The male would not let the female out though, which was too bad as she wanted to come out and visit.
Overall, I am not sure one could have expected much better diving or conditions. The sun was out, the waters were calm, the current fairly non-existent.
Stay wet!!!!
